Fay Leong has been a Middle and High School teacher for 18 years. She has a Bachelor’s degree in History and English, and a Masters in Special Education from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. She has taught Middle and High school Social Studies, MYP Humanities, VCE History (for Grade 12 state exams in Victoria, Australia), AP Psychology, IB Psychology, English, Writing, Special Education and Study Skills in schools in Australia, Korea, Istanbul and China. Past workshops that she has conducted include “The City: Interactions within an urban environment” (MYP conference, Lisbon, Portugal, 2006), “An introduction to Homo Faber” (IICS, Istanbul, Turkey, 2005), and "The 6+1 Traits: Writing across the curriculum" (SAS, Shanghai, China, 2008). She has developed a number of curriculum initiatives involving integration of curriculum, cooperative learning and team teaching. Fay is a strong believer in the importance of a constructivist curriculum and in the need to move curriculum forwards to meet the needs of the 21st century. She is currently experimenting with the use of the wiki as an integral component of classroom teaching and wondering how she can keep her students in the computer lab without it looking as though she is monopolising it.
Susannah Muench has been a Middle and High School teacher for five years. She has a Bachelor’s degree in International Political Economy and a Masters in Education. She has taught History, Language Arts, Reading and Writing, Biology and Health in schools in the United States, Honduras, and China. She was involved in a Coalition of Essential Schools pilot program at Tyee High School in Seattle, Washington in which she developed curriculum, created a common set of policies and established a personalized learning environment for challenged 9th graders. She is a Critical Friends trainer and has been involved in implementing the program in several schools. She has given presentations on Critical Friends, Use of Podcasts in the Classroom, Habits of Mind, and How To Create Effective Advisory Programs. She believes that it is imperative that we create programs which not only challenge students intellectually but also empower them to make changes within their own communities.
Shannon Brown has been in education for 12 years. She earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Middle Grades Education with a concentration in Communication Skill and Social Studies from Greensboro College, Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. She taught language arts and social studies for five years before moving into a graduate program and a role as curriculum facilitator where she mentored teachers, taught workshops for teachers, modeled lessons, coordinated tutoring programs, and worked closely with performance data. Then, she served as the k-12 Social Studies curriculum specialist in her school district. In this role, she worked with 112 schools county-wide to implement all social studies curriculum. Before moving to China she was an assistant principal for two years. She earned her Masters of School Administration, Education Specialist degree and Doctorate of Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. 2008 marked her first year as an international educator and her first time back in the classroom after 6 years. Dr. Brown has developed curriculum in language arts and social studies, presented at multiple conferences including the National Paideia Conference and the Closing the Gap Conference.
